Can you get braces at 50, 60 or older?

Yes. Age alone doesn't rule out braces or Invisalign. What matters is healthy gums and enough bone around your teeth.

That question comes up a lot in Mount Dora, where 33.1% of residents are 65 or older, according to U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts. Many adults who ask us about braces are retired or close to it.

Two things tend to change with age. Adult bone generally remodels more slowly, so treatment can run a little longer than it would for a teenager. And there's usually more dental work, gum recession or missing teeth to plan around, which Dr. Ogden looks at before he talks about options.

Invisalign for adults

Invisalign moves your teeth with a series of clear aligners made from a digital scan. You take them out to eat and to drink anything but water, brush, then put them back in.

They only work while you're wearing them, so plan on 20 to 22 hours a day. That's the catch for anyone who sips coffee or snacks all day. Comprehensive treatment usually runs longer than twelve months and includes three refinements, and Touch-Up generally takes under six months.

See each step of treatment on our Invisalign in Mount Dora page.

Clear and metal braces for adults

Braces stay on your teeth, so they keep working without you having to remember anything. Clear ceramic brackets blend in with your teeth and cost the same as metal.

Metal braces with self-ligating brackets at Ogden Orthodontics in Mount Dora, FL

We use self-ligating brackets, and many patients have them placed with indirect bonding, where the bracket positions are planned on a model of your teeth first.

Most braces cases take 18 to 24 months, with a visit every 6 to 8 weeks. Read what's included on our braces in Mount Dora page.

Lingual braces for adults

Lingual brackets are bonded to the back of your teeth, so nobody sees them from the front. We use InSmile, a lingual system with a wire shaped for your teeth.

The trade-off is a sore tongue and a slight lisp for the first days to weeks, and they take more care to clean around. They don't suit every bite, so Dr. Ogden checks yours first. More on lingual braces.

One-minute quiz

Which option fits you? Take the one-minute quiz

Answer four questions to see which option usually fits adults with answers like yours.

2. Has your dentist mentioned an implant, crown or bridge, or are any teeth missing?

3. How much does it matter if people can see your treatment?

4. Could you wear aligners 20 to 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat and brush?

Your result

Pick one answer in each of the four questions above.

Start over

Only an exam tells you for sure. Dr. Ogden confirms which option fits your teeth at your free visit, and you leave with the price in writing.

Invisalign Touch-Up

Your teeth shifted a little since braces and you can wear aligners 20 to 22 hours a day. Touch-Up is $2,495 and generally takes under six months.

Invisalign Comprehensive

You have crowding, gaps or a bite concern, or you're not sure, and you can wear aligners 20 to 22 hours a day. Comprehensive is $4,895 and includes three refinements.

Clear ceramic braces

You'd rather your treatment be hard to notice and you don't want to keep track of aligners. Clear braces are $4,550, the same as metal.

Lingual braces

You don't want anyone to see your treatment and you'd rather not wear aligners. Lingual braces are priced in writing at your consultation.

Metal braces

The look doesn't bother you and you'd rather not wear aligners. Metal braces are $4,550, the same as clear.

Invisalign only works when you wear it 20 to 22 hours a day, so braces may suit your routine better. Dr. Ogden can go over both at your free visit.

Bring your dentist's plan to the consultation. Dental work or missing teeth don't rule anything out, and Dr. Ogden works from that plan.

Braces with crowns, implants or gum recession

Dental work and gum changes don't rule out braces or Invisalign for adults, but they shape the plan. Dr. Ogden checks your gums, bone and dental work before he recommends anything.

Gums and bone come first

Teeth need healthy gums and bone around them to move safely. If your gums need care, your dentist or a periodontist treats them first, and you keep up your regular cleanings during treatment.

Missing teeth

Straightening can open a space so your dentist can place an implant or bridge, or close a gap altogether.

If your Mount Dora, Eustis or Tavares dentist has suggested orthodontics before restorative work, bring that plan to your consultation and we'll work from it.

Crowns, bridges and implants

Teeth with crowns can usually still be moved. An implant is fixed in the bone and won't move, so Dr. Ogden plans the other teeth around it. A bridge joins teeth together, which also changes how they can move.

How Dr. Ogden decides what to recommend

Dr. Ogden tells adults what treatment can change, what it can't, and whether it's worth doing at all.

Sometimes the right answer is to wait. If your gums aren't stable, he'll want them treated before any teeth move. And a few bite problems come from the size or position of the jaw itself, which moving teeth alone can't fully correct. He'll tell you at the first visit if yours is one of them.

What adult braces and Invisalign cost in Mount Dora

Adult treatment at Ogden Orthodontics in Mount Dora costs $2,495 to $4,895 for Invisalign and $4,550 for metal or clear braces. Lingual braces are priced at your consultation. Fees are the same at our Mount Dora, Clermont and Windermere offices.

You get your price in writing at your free consultation, and you won't pay for X-rays before you have a quote.

What the fee includes

The braces fee covers your exam, scan and records, every scheduled adjustment, repairs for loose brackets or poking wires, and your first set of retainers. If treatment runs longer than planned, the fee stays the same.

Invisalign Comprehensive includes three refinements, and extra refinements are $500 each. Replacement retainers start at $225.

Monthly payments

In-house financing is 0% interest, with terms of 12, 18 or 24 months. Braces at $4,550 with $300 down over 24 months comes to about $177 a month.

Cherry payment plans and military discounts are also available. Orthodontic treatment is generally eligible for HSA and FSA funds.

Insurance

Many dental plans include an orthodontic benefit with a lifetime maximum, and some cover only children. We check your benefit before you start and file the claim for you.

Plans we work with include Delta Dental, DeltaCare USA, Cigna, MetLife, United Healthcare, Ameritas and The Standard.

What happens at your free adult consultation

  1. Tell us what you'd like to change. The crowding, the gap, the bite, the photos you avoid.
  2. Dr. Ogden examines your teeth, gums and bite. We take a digital scan of your teeth.
  3. You hear your options and your price. He explains which treatments fit and how long each would take, and you leave with the price in writing.

Bring your insurance card, any treatment plan from your dentist, and a list of the medications you take. Some medicines, including certain osteoporosis drugs, can affect how teeth move, so Dr. Ogden asks about them.

Plan on about 30 minutes. You don't need a referral, and nobody asks you to decide in the chair.

Rather start from home? Send a few photos of your smile from your phone, and we'll follow up with what Dr. Ogden sees.

Questions adults ask about braces and Invisalign

Am I too old for braces?

No. Age alone doesn't rule out braces or Invisalign. Dr. Ogden checks your gums and the bone around your teeth at your free consultation and tells you honestly whether treatment makes sense.

Is it worth getting braces as an adult?

For many adults, yes. Straighter teeth can be easier to clean, a better bite can mean less uneven wear, and treatment can set up an implant or crown your dentist has planned. Dr. Ogden tells you at your consultation what treatment would change for you.

How much do adult braces cost in Mount Dora?

Metal or clear ceramic braces at Ogden Orthodontics in Mount Dora are $4,550, or about $177 a month with $300 down over 24 months at 0% interest. Invisalign is $2,495 for Touch-Up and $4,895 for Comprehensive.

Is Invisalign cheaper than braces?

Not at our office. Invisalign Comprehensive is $4,895 and braces are $4,550. Touch-Up is $2,495, less than either, but it's only for small shifts.

Does Medicare cover braces or Invisalign?

Original Medicare doesn't cover braces or Invisalign, because it doesn't cover routine dental care. Some Medicare Advantage plans add dental benefits, so check whether yours includes orthodontics.

Does dental insurance cover braces for adults?

Sometimes. Some plans limit orthodontic coverage to children, while others include adults, usually with a lifetime maximum. We check your benefit before you start and file the claim.

Can I use HSA or FSA money for adult braces?

Generally, yes. HSA and FSA funds can usually pay for orthodontic treatment, including braces and Invisalign. Once you're on Medicare you can't add money to an HSA, but you can still spend what you've saved.

Is Invisalign or braces better for adults?

It depends on your bite and your routine. Invisalign is hard to see and comes out for meals, but it only works if you wear it 20 to 22 hours a day. Braces work around the clock without you thinking about them.

How long do adult braces take?

Most braces cases take 18 to 24 months, and adult cases can run a little longer because adult bone generally remodels more slowly. Invisalign Touch-Up generally takes under six months, and Comprehensive usually runs longer than twelve months.

Will people notice my braces or Invisalign?

Invisalign and clear ceramic braces are hard to spot in conversation, and lingual braces can't be seen from the front. Invisalign can cause a slight lisp for the first few days, and lingual braces can take a few weeks for your tongue to adjust to.

Can I get braces if I have crowns, implants or gum recession?

Usually, yes. Teeth with crowns can typically still be moved, and Dr. Ogden plans around implants and bridges. With gum recession or bone loss, your gums need to be healthy and stable first.

Do adult braces hurt?

Braces and aligners cause pressure and some soreness at any age. Expect a few tender days after braces go on and after adjustments, and some pressure with each new set of aligners. Soft foods help for a day or two.

Will I need a retainer after treatment?

Yes. Teeth tend to drift over time, so a retainer holds your result. Your first set is included with braces, and replacement retainers start at $225.

Should I see an orthodontist or my dentist for adult braces?

An orthodontist is a dentist with years of extra training in moving teeth and correcting bites. Dr. Ogden completed his orthodontic residency at the University of Florida. Your dentist stays part of the team for cleanings and dental work, and you don't need a referral to book.
