Orthodontic Emergency: What to Do

orthodontic emergency

If you’ve ever had braces, you know that an orthodontic emergency can sometimes occur. Whether it’s a wire poking out of the brackets, a loose bracket, or a piece of your appliance falling off, it can be stressful. But don’t panic! There are steps you can take to handle an orthodontic emergency and get back on track with your treatment.

Contact Us

If you’re experiencing an orthodontic emergency, the first thing you should do is contact us. Make sure you let them know exactly what happened and provide as much detail as possible. We will be able to assess the situation and determine the best course of action. We may be able to provide advice over the phone or schedule an appointment for you to come into the office.

Make Use of Orthodontic Wax

If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort due to a wire or bracket, you can use orthodontic wax to provide some relief. This wax is designed to help protect the inside of your mouth from any sharp edges or points. Simply place a small piece of the wax over the area and it will help protect the area as it heals. Just make sure you don’t overdo it—too much wax can end up making the situation worse. Read our FAQs.

Use a Cold Compress

If you’re experiencing swelling or pain due to an orthodontic emergency, using a cold compress can help reduce inflammation and provide some relief. Wrap a cold, damp cloth or ice pack in a towel and apply it to the affected area for 10-15 minutes at a time.

Try to Reposition a Loose Bracket or Wire

If a bracket or wire becomes loose, you may be able to reposition it back into place. Use a cotton swab to carefully push the wire or bracket back into place. If it doesn’t stay in place, don’t force it—contact your orthodontist right away.

Avoid Eating with Your Braces

If you’re experiencing an orthodontic emergency, it’s important to avoid eating with your braces until the situation has been resolved. Eating with braces can cause further damage and make the situation worse. Stick to soft foods until you’re able to see us.

By following the steps outlined above, you can handle an orthodontic emergency and get back on track with your treatment. Remember, we are here to help—so don’t hesitate to contact us if you’re ever in need. With the right care and attention, you can get through any orthodontic emergency and continue your journey to a beautiful smile.
