Caring for Your Teeth During Orthodontic Treatment

Good oral health is essential for a healthy smile and our team can help you achieve that. However, it’s important to be aware of the special needs that your teeth have during orthodontic treatment. Here are some tips to help you care for your teeth during orthodontic treatment.

Brush and Floss Regularly

Brushing and flossing are essential for keeping your teeth and gums healthy, even when you have braces. Be sure to brush twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and use fluoride toothpaste. Flossing should also be done at least once a day to remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth and around your braces.

Use an Interdental Brush

An interdental brush is a small brush shaped like a pipe cleaner that can help you clean around your braces and in hard-to-reach places. It’s important to use an interdental brush to ensure that all the food particles and plaque are removed from around your braces.

Avoid Certain Foods

Certain hard and sticky foods can damage your braces, so it’s important to avoid them during orthodontic treatment. Examples of foods to avoid include popcorn, hard candy, and sticky candy.

Rinse With a Fluoride Mouthwash

Fluoride helps to prevent cavities and can be beneficial during orthodontic treatment. Use a fluoride mouthwash once a day to help protect your teeth from cavities.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

It’s important to see your dentist regularly during orthodontic treatment. Your dentist can monitor your teeth for cavities, as well as check for any damage to your braces.

Wear a Mouthguard When Playing Sports

If you play any contact sports, it’s important to wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth and braces from damage.

Be Careful With Your Braces

Avoid activities that can damage your braces, such as biting your nails or chewing on pens. Also, be sure to avoid eating hard and sticky foods, as they can damage your braces.

These tips can help you keep your teeth and gums healthy during orthodontic treatment. Be sure to follow our instructions regarding oral hygiene and care for your braces. With proper care, you can have a healthy and beautiful smile in no time!
